"He's too powerful to destroy. So we sealed him away, trapped him in a different form. One that was smaller, harmless."
Wilson explaining how this version of Bendy came to be in, Bendy and the Dark Revival: Chapter 5

Bendy is the titular deuteragonist of Bendy and the Dark Revival and one of the many inhabitants Audrey encounters during her journey in the Cycle. He is the subdued, weakened, and adorable form of the Ink Demon, being much more similar to his original cartoon counterpart than his monstrous persona.

General Description[]

Physical Appearance[]

Like other cartoon representations of Joey Drew Studios characters, Bendy appears as a three-dimensional living version of his cartoon design. Unlike the original design, he wears a proper outfit, with a brown waistcoat and striped pants while retaining his signature bow-tie and gloves. When he is out of the Cycle, his face and gloves are now white while the tie is shaded red and the rest of his clothes are a dark blue.

Despite his overall intact appearance in contrast to the other monsters of the studio, Bendy still has some imperfections. The ink on his head is uneven and dripping over his face. He also has numerous ink stains on his clothing.

Personality[]

Though his character biography says he is just as mischievous as his cartoon persona, Bendy is actually rather timid and has a childlike demeanor. He is able to display a range of emotions despite being mute, crying when Audrey accidentally hurts him and fleeing when he sees her later on, as well as being visibly afraid when Audrey mentions the Gent Workshop due to the Keepers' torture and experimentation.

However, in stark contrast to his original incarnation, Bendy does not wish to hurt others. He is willing to help those he befriends, seemingly rather cheerful around them. Also acts like a child and likes being around people.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

At least 211 days before the events of Dark Revival, Wilson found his way into the realm of the Studio after discovering the Ink Machine in the real world. At this time, Bendy was in the form of the Ink Demon, who terrorized the Cycle and its inhabitants. Wilson, on seeing the demon's power, began searching for a way to destroy him in order to gain power for himself.

Using existing technology left behind by the Gent Corporation and his own creations of the Keepers, Wilson managed to capture and perform numerous experiments on a subdued Ink Demon in order to work out a way to kill him. Despite utilizing torture and surgical procedures, their efforts were unsuccessful. It was then that the focus was shifted away from destroying the demon to removing his power, rendering him harmless.

To that end, Wilson used Gent's signal towers, machines built to block access to the powers of individuals within the Cycle. The end result forced the Ink Demon to transform into a smaller, far less powerful form resembling his original cartoon self. Logs made by the Keepers of their continued experiments proved that this new Bendy was capable of experiencing and showing emotions such as pain and sadness, to the point they noted "tears of ink" and screams.

Presuming the Ink Demon to be trapped in this weakened state forever, Wilson declared him to be dead and used this claim to rise to a position of authority within the Cycle. At some point, Bendy was able to escape and was left to wander alone throughout the studio.

Bendy and the Dark Revival[]

After Audrey is brought into the Cycle as part of Wilson's plans, she encounters Bendy within Animation Alley, playing with a toy train. Though he is initially wary of her, she insists she is a friend until her newly-discovered powers accidentally trigger, knocking away the train and hurting him. This also, unknowingly, gifted the Ink Demon a means to break out of his confinement within his weaker self. With tears in his eyes, Bendy runs away.

Bendy is seen a handful of times throughout Audrey's journey, though is quick to run away from her each time he is spotted. It is only after she arrives at the Subway station that she is able to talk to Bendy again properly. She apologizes for their first encounter and guesses Bendy doesn't want to hurt her either, to which he agrees. Though he seems afraid of her destination of the Gent building, Audrey's reassurances to protect him cause Bendy to trust her and the two venture into town.

On the streets, Bendy follows Audrey wherever she explores, staying out of the way of stray Lost Ones and pointing out items of interest to search for when looking for a way to get into the Gent building. However, after Audrey obtains an ID card at the Downside Hotel, she returns to find Bendy has vanished.

Pressing on towards the Gent facility, Audrey suddenly encounters the Ink Demon blocking her way inside. At that moment, the signal towers at the entrance activate, subduing Audrey's powers and forcing the Ink Demon to transform back into the Bendy she had befriended. With Audrey now realizing that the two demons are the same entity, Bendy walks away and disappears into the ink, looking ashamed.

This form of Bendy is not seen again until the end of the game, after Audrey has reset the Cycle and returned to the real world. As she remarks that the Cycle is starting to leak into reality, she turns to see Bendy, now in full color, standing by her side.

Bendy: Secrets of the Machine[]

There is a small vent to the right of the Vending Machine in the main hub. The player can toss 3 cans (Bacon Soup or Beans) into a metal tube in the top right corner. This will unlock a gate with an X on it. When the gate fully unlocks and reveals the Oldtime Theater, the player can look and see Bendy peeking through the opening for a few seconds, before going back down.

If the player interacts with the door to Riley's Memories (the door to the right of the entrance) without breaking the windows, Bendy will appear in a small vent to the left of the door to the Teaser Room. Just like he does when the Oldtime Theater is revealed, he returns to hiding a few seconds after appearing.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the Ink Demon's insistence that he will consume Audrey throughout the game, Bendy seems to have no intention to hurt her, and also appears ashamed when Audrey sees what he used to be, quickly walking away, which shows they have a split personality between the two.
  • While Toon Bendy in Bendy and the Ink Machine was depicted as nude, (save for his gloves, bow-tie, and shoes), he has had accessories that befitted the plot of whatever short he's in (like a hula skirt in "The Dancing Demon" or a fire chief hat in "Hellfire Fighter"). Keeping that in mind along with the split personality, Bendy's full attire in this appearance could very well be a spoof of Dr. Henry Jekyll from "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", which was a popular concept retold in many real world cartoons.
    • The clothing might've also been given to him to hide his scars, as Keepers Log 44 reveal that the sides of Bendy's body had been cut with lengths of steel wire to test his ability to feel and express emotions in response to physical pain. The fact he cried tears of ink and screamed in discomfort without transforming back into the Ink Demon was considered "progress".
  • Lauren Synger, the voice actress for Alice Angel and Allison Angel, claimed that Audrey's voice actor Erin Lehn had jokingly nicknamed this version of Bendy "Baby Benders".
    • Considering that nickname, and the way Audrey herself speaks gently and motherly to Bendy every time she approaches him, acts as a subtle hint that Audrey has the opposite opinion of Bendy then her father, Joey Drew. Joey, in his own book, described Bendy as a young adult, and intended to use the little demon as a means to make money, but ended up locking him away when his Ink Demon form via the Ink Machine was considered an abomination that would scare away visitors to Bendyland. Audrey, on the other hand, approaches Bendy like a frightened little kid that needs a friend, and has come to accept the demon in all forms, (despite having to hide from the Ink Demon to survive), to the point of telling Beast Bendy "we'll just have to do better next time" before resetting the Cycle.
    • It might also reference the fanbase's love for this Bendy, calling him cute and adorable due to his personality.
  • When Bendy is accompanying Audrey during Chapter 4, attacking him with the Gent Pipe causes his head to spin around like a globe with a cartoonish sound effect.
    • Also when accompanying Audrey, Bendy will point to items of interest to find the clues needed the enter the Gent workshop, but also towards the intractable door in the back alley for the purpose of an achievement.
  • Originally, Bendy was planned to talk via squeaks, but this was believed to be too distracting and the suggestion was scrapped soon after to make him completely mute instead.
  • Until the V1.0.3 patch, there was a visual bug where Bendy's holiday hat would be visible during the ending cutscene of Chapter 3, regardless of whether or not the Winter Abyss mode was activated.
